Gambling is a game where huge amount are put at stake and the outcome of the game completely depends upon chances. It had come into being as a social activity meant for recreation. But after a few winning chances people become addicted to this game and could not control the greed even on loosing huge money. It has been instrumental in ruining many families. Compulsive gambling is a pathological disorder and there are many treatments in place to help the victim. The first step in any treatment is that the victim should realize that gambling is a disorder.

Recognizing gambling as a disorder

The victim of compulsive gambling should realize that gambling is affecting his physical and mental health. Self-realization in this case is of prime importance. Generally people tend to alienate from his family whenever he enters the loosing phase of his gambling mania. This is the time when his physical and mental health is affected the most. During the loosing period of his gambling mania the victim does anything to finance his gambling including taking heavy loan. Since he could not bring back the amount thus he has to great amount of humiliation. This makes the victim very offensive. During this period not only the victim suffers but his family also has to bear the brunt. The people dependent on him have to go through pain. By seeing the sorry state of his family the victim should realize the effect of the gambling on his life.

Admit the problem and discuss

Once the person realizes that gambling is a menace it is the time to admit it before everyone that he has been addicted to gambling. Until and unless the person admits that gambling has ruined his life there is no way that he can be treated. There is a general tendency of shying away from the fact due to the fear of rejection from the society. But he should acquire full support of his family and seek help from his well wishers. Various social organizations, which are into helping such victims, should be approached for help.

Thus gambling is a social hazard, which should be eradicated from the roots to make the society a better place to live.
