The different types of alcoholic drinks can lead to different hangover symptoms. This is because different alcoholic drinks contain different levels of congeners (byproducts of fermentation) in alcohol. The greatest amount of congeners (which are toxins) is contained in dark liquors such as bourbon, brandy, tequila, whiskey and dark rum. White wine, vodka and gin have less congeners in them and therefore you experience less hangover symptoms.

Different types of alcoholic drinks have various levels of impurities. The cheaper the drink the more impurities, the more hangover symptoms you will experience.

Beer is carbonated which means that it can actually speed up the body’s absorption of some of the alcohol which increases the level in your bloodstream, when you chase a beer with liquor you are not giving your body enough time to process the toxins and you will intensify your symptoms.

When you drink more than just 2 or 3 drinks you liver cannot keep up with you and is unable to handle the amount of toxins present when you drink more than a few alcoholic drinks. Besides less body weight, women have less acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and glutathione in their bodies, which is why they should not try to keep up with the guys when out drinking. Women will not only feel the hangover symptoms more severely; they will suffer more liver damage if they have a pattern of over-drinking.

Some of your hangover symptoms are actually a result of something called “glutamine rebound”, such as fatigue, stomach irritation and a general feeling of illness. This rebounding that the body does after a night of drinking will mean that your body is unable to sleep as soundly, so you will not feel well rested. The rebound stimulates the brain to increase glutamine in order to make up for lost time because of the time when the production of glutamine was inhibited by the alcohol, so it produces too much once you stop drinking at the time when you are trying to sleep. This is why the brain is stimulated during the night after the drinking and the individual experiences restlessness and wakes up fatigued.

The increase in glutamine levels will also cause other hangover symptoms like: tremors, anxiety, restlessness and it can also increase your blood pressure.

Alcohol is absorbed directly through your stomach, so this is why your stomach becomes upset when you have consumed too much alcohol. When the lining of the stomach becomes irritated it sends a message to expel the contents of the stomach, which is why vomiting is a hangover symptom. Diarrhea and lack of appetite are two other hangover symptoms that are a result of stomach irritation from the alcohol.

For people who drink, there is quite often the downside of the swinging party – the hangover you have the next day. Whether you are planning a big New Year’s bash, a bachelor party, or just the perfect weekend fling, you may find yourself paying for it in ways besides the new stain in the carpet or the broken lamp in the living room. Here are some tips to surviving your party.

First, it helps to know a little about hangovers. A cup of coffee will not make you sober, too much Tylenol can be as bad for your liver as the drinks, and drinking more alcohol is only going to keep you drunk longer. How bad your hangover will be is dependent on how high your blood alcohol level gets, how fast you downed the beers, and how much you drink throughout the night. That alcohol has to leave your system, and afterwards it can take up to a day to feel better.

If you able to the best thing you can do for your hangover is to stay asleep. In many cases, your party caused you to stay up well past your normal bedtime. That coupled with the lower blood sugar from the alcohol, can wipe you out.

The hangover cures of drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages or taking a cold shower can help you feel more awake if you need to be, however, it will not actually remove the alcohol from your body. Plus, keep in mind that if you are tired and hung over, you are going to still be suffering from impaired judgment and tiredness, so avoid driving.

Some people believe that having another drink when you wake up will help cure the hangover. In reality, all it does is put more alcohol into your bloodstream. This can further dehydration and mineral deficiencies, and further your symptoms once the buzz of the alcohol has worn off. A better choice is to go with water and sports drinks.

Many people find themselves reaching into their medicine cabinets for hangover cures. However, take the time to read labels. Antacids can help with nausea and stomach pain, and anti-inflammatory medications can help with headaches and other pain. However, many anti-inflammatory medications are also irritants to your stomach, making nausea worse. You should also avoid acetaminophen, which is toxic to the liver when mixed with alcohol.

Of course, the best way to cure a hangover is to prevent it. The only surefire way to not get hung over is not to drink, but if you must drink there are some things that you can do.

Start with pacing yourself. Drinking alcoholic beverages slowly will help limit the amount of alcohol that is in your system at one time, making it easier for your body to cope. At the same time, drink water and other drinks without alcohol. This will help to limit the amount of alcohol you do drink, as well as help to keep you from becoming dehydrated.

Eat while you drink instead of drinking on an empty stomach. This slows down the amount of alcohol that is absorbed. Also try fruits and fruit juices, since some studies suggest that these decrease hangover intensity.

In the morning, stick with bland foods. Crackers and toast can raise blood sugar while being easy on the stomach.

While many people enjoy going out for an evening of drinking and hanging around with friends, there are few that enjoy the subsequent hangover that comes with it. Here are some of the best things to do to avoid hangovers.

The best way to avoid a hangover is to limit the amount of drinks that you consume. What you do drink, drink slowly so that your body has time to process the alcohol. Always drink with food on your stomach, as this also slows down the alcohol absorption. Continuing to eat while you drink and after you get home may also help. Taking a vitamin C supplement before you go to bed will help replenish some of the nutrients you lost due to the dehydration.

An important part of avoiding a hangover is in knowing what to drink. All alcohols contain congeners, but some contain more than others. Vodka is one of the “safest” drinks when it comes to congener content, and bourbon is the most dangerous. Other colored alcohols are not far behind. Red wine is also a “dangerous” alcohol, but more so for the tyramine it contains than anything else. Light colored alcohols are safer, but remember that any alcohol can cause a problem if you drink enough of it. Use caution when drinking sweet mixed drinks or eating sugary foods, since this can affect how much alcohol you consume.

When you are drinking, you should also avoid any carbonated drinks. This includes the obvious ones like champagne, but keep in mind that mixing rum with Coke is also giving you carbonation as well. The bubbles cause your body to absorb more alcohol more quickly, putting an overload on your system. Plus, since many people think that carbonated drinks are “lighter” than heavier alcohol, they tend to overindulge without evening realizing it until it is too late.

Remember to be aware of your personal size and build. If you are a 120 pound woman, it is a pretty safe bet that you are not going to be able to drink your 250 pound date under the table. Half as much alcohol as what he is drinking, and you end up with the same blood alcohol level – and the same chance of having a hangover the next morning. So keep size in perspective when ordering drinks, and know your personal limit.

Consider over the counter hangover preventatives. While it may take some experimentation to figure out which ones work best for you, some actually can help to reduce the risk of having a hangover and/or the severity. Look for ones with activated charcoal as one of the active ingredients.

You can also consider starting your hangover treatment the night before. Some drinkers will swear by taking some Alka-Seltzer or a couple of aspirins with water before heading to bed. This may not be the best idea, however, if you have a sensitive stomach and/or have already started throwing up. If that is the case, work on getting yourself hydrated as quickly as possible. Plain water or fruit juices work best.

So, you just attended the best party of your life last night. You enjoyed a few drinks, hanging out with friends, a few more drinks – was there karaoke and Twister involved? The details are a little fuzzy. Unfortunately, now that you are wide awake, you have one reminder that is all too clear – the pounding headache, nausea, and other symptoms that are welcoming you to the morning-after hangover.

The pain and discomfort that you are feeling is actually the result of several different factors. The blood vessels in your head have started to expand again leaving you with a pounding headache. The diuretic effects of the alcohol have left you dehydrated, furthering your headache and causing thirst and dizziness. Your blood sugar has dropped, leaving you fatigued and shaky. Your stomach is irritated, causing nausea and vomiting.

Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot that you can do during the next eight to 24 hours that is really going to make you feel better – you just have to let the alcohol work its way out of your system. And if your drinking buddies are pounding at your bedroom door swearing that they can cure your headache, then they are wrong. Here is a look at some common “cures” for hangovers.

Your morning standby – the cup of coffee – may help you wake up, but it will not help the hangover. Instead, you will be a wide-awake recovering drunk – not the best feeling in the world.

A shower will wash off the grunge from last night, but does not cleanse the alcohol from your system.

Over the counter pain relievers may help your headache, but they will not do anything for the nausea and other symptoms. Plus, for some people, they can cause more damage than good and leave you feeling worse.

Drinking more alcohol will only make you more drunk.

Exercise might get you out in the fresh air, but it will not remove alcohol from your system either.

If you still feel that your drinking buddies might be in the know on hangover cures, you can always check with your doctor. The British Medical Journal looked at various hangover treatment studies, and found that there were none that were actually effective at preventing or curing a hangover.

So what do you do? At this point, all you can do is ride it out. But you can use it is a lesson of what not to do the next time you are out.

For the next time, practice hangover prevention. Drink slowly, alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones, and know your limit. While you drinking buddies might think you are a lightweight, you will be the one that is feeling better come morning.

Watch which alcoholic beverages you choose. Dark liquors contain more of the chemicals that cause hangovers than the lighter ones, and cheaper alcohols have more than the more expensive varieties.

If you still have a hangover, just do your best to get your body back to normal. Fruit juice and water can hydrate you, and bland foods may help settle your stomach. Avoid too much activity or things that require concentration, and just wait the hangover out.

If you drink, you know that every time you do so you are putting yourself at risk for a hangover. Here are seven tips that can help you to drink and still feel good the next morning.

Number One: Drink water. Sounds easy enough, but this simple step can help with the majority of your hangover ills. It will keep you from becoming dehydrated and slow down your rate of alcohol consumption. Drink water before you leave, in between alcoholic drinks, and when you get home. Of course, this is the most effective if you can stick to it. If you forget, drink as much water as you can before heading off to bed. When you wake up in the morning, you should start drinking water as soon as you can.

Number Two: Buy yourself a bottle of vitamin B complex tablets. Vitamin B depletion is a bad side effect of dehydration. Take a supplement before you leave the house and another when you get home, and you will be thanking yourself in the morning.

Number Three: Try hypnosis. No, this does not mean going out drinking while you are in a trance. However, hypnosis can help with the recovery of a hangover by helping your body to relax and ignore some of your pain. You can find pre-recorded hypnosis sessions to help you get started out if you are new to the experience.

Number Four: Drink the hair of the dog that bit you. No, you do not have to go out and shave your favorite pet. Some people believe that having another alcoholic drink of the same variety you were drinking the night before will help keep the hangover at bay. In general, this has no medical proof, however, and will usually just postpone your hangover until later.

Number Five: Drink fruit juice. If you had the party at your place, you may have a stockpile from serving mixed drinks the night before. Fruit juice is packed with vitamins to help with the dehydration, while at the same time the liquid itself with help. Juices packed with vitamin C are the best, and look for varieties that are 100% juice as they will be more effective than juice blends.

Number Six: Get some fresh air. Yes, a little exercise will do you could. If you live within walking distance from the bar, and are in a safe neighborhood, a walk home can be a great help with sobering you up and getting your systems functioning again. Or try getting out for a quiet walk the next morning to soothe your nerves.

Number Seven: Watch your painkillers. Some may be very effective with dulling the pain, but when combined with the alcohol in your system can have toxic side effects on your liver and other systems. Read labels carefully, and avoid taking any painkillers the night of drinking – wait until the morning when most of the alcohol has been cleared from your system.

If all else fails, remember that all hangovers get better with time. And next time, you will know better and be able to watch what you drink.

It is an all too common scenario: you spend your evening being the life of the party – drinking, dancing, and hanging out with all your friends. You feel on top of the world and are really having a good time. The next morning, you wake with your eyes bloodshot and your head pounding, and a desire to hide under your pillow until the end of the world. The dreaded hangover headache is upon you, causing you to feel sick, in pain, and to run to the bathroom every five minutes. Here is what you need to know for the next time you forget your promise of “never again!”

First, you might find it helpful to understand how and why your favorite alcoholic drinks are leaving you with such a massive headache the next morning. In many cases, the chemical ethanol is your primary culprit. Ethanol is what happens when you ferment the sugar and starch found in grains. You may also be familiar with its uses as a motor fuel as well as its drink applications – any wonder now that it makes you feel terrible?

There are several ways that ethanol can give you a major headache. First is from vasodilatation. Vasodilatation is where the blood vessels in your body start to expand. This can give you the flushed look as there is more blood towards the surface of your skin, as well as cause the pain in your head from veins being stretched to the max. At the same time, Ethanol is a diuretic; hence the frequent trips to the bathroom. This causes you to lose vitamins, minerals, and salt as well as become dehydrated. As your body starts to realize that it is becoming dehydrated, it kicks into survival mode, and goes to protect your most important parts – your internal organs and your brain (the same thing would happen if you got stranded in the desert). This in turn causes more stress on your already sensitive blood vessels in your head, increasing your pain and discomfort.

This is also just considering the ethanol in your drink. Since most people go for quantity, not quality, for their night on the town, you probably consumed a lot of chemicals known as congeners. These are impurities found in the alcohol as a by product of the fermentation process, and are part of what gives the different forms of alcohol their distinct tastes. These impurities are also a surefire way to a hangover headache. In general, the darker your drink, the more congeners it has, so stick to clear alcohols if you are trying to avoid the morning after pain.

So now that you understand how the hangover headache occurs, you may be wondering how to prevent it. Of course, the best way is to not drink at all, or to drink moderately. Unfortunately, for the party animals out there, this might be easier said than done.

If you must drink, drink plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration – both before and after going out as well as during the party. Water is an easy option, though sports drinks and juices contain electrolytes and vitamins that can give you a boost as well.

Hangovers are not very enjoyable – the dry mouth, nausea, and dizziness are more than enough of a discouragement if the headache does not do you in first. Unfortunately, by the time that you are suffering from the symptoms, it is often too late to do much of anything. You can try a variety of remedies, but there is a pretty good chance that they will do little, if anything to help.

Even the Mayo Clinic, some of the best medical professionals in the country, will tell you that that the best way to get rid of a hangover is not to get one in the first place. If ignore their warnings, getting enough rest, water, and over the counter medications are about as good as you are going to get. Even so, there are plenty of folk remedies hanging around that drinkers throughout the world and throughout the ages will swear work.

The “hair of the dog” – which basically means drinking more alcohol, has been a longtime favorite remedy for hangovers – even since the time of Shakespeare. There are a variety of recipes out there for you to try, all involving some alcohol and a variety of other ingredients that you have to choke down. The Bloody Mary became popular during the Roaring Twenties, and this tomato juice cocktail is still one of the most popular morning-after hangover cures around. Another drink, known as the Black Velvet, includes champagne and flat Guinness, and is also quite popular for relieving hangovers. Tomato juice and beer was a common cure for Hemingway’s drinking indulgences.

If the idea of drinking more alcohol does not appeal to you as you are developing a new relationship with your toilet, then there are plenty of food remedies that you can give a try. For Hispanics, a Mexican soup known as menudo, whose primary ingredient is boiled tripe, is a popular dish to cure hangovers. Go back in time, and the Romans ate deep-fried canaries, while the Greeks preferred sheep’s lungs. Other ancients found relief by eating boiled cabbage before a night of drinking. Does alcohol make you feel like a knight in shining armor? Then you can always try the medieval recipe of eel and bitter almonds. In many cases, however, the sufferer from the hangover finds these cures worse than the symptoms themselves.

In more recent times, there are a variety of other remedies that you can try. Some have a minimal base in science, with direct emphasis on treating the symptoms and their causes. For instance, since dehydration, low blood sugar, and a loss of essential vitamins and nutrients often cause the worse symptoms, many hangover “cures” seek to rectify these conditions, but do nothing to actually eliminate the alcohol from your system.

However, if you are willing to give them a try, most of them will not hurt. Tomato juice, aspirin, a hot shower, coffee, orange juice, honey, plenty of water, vitamin supplements, buttermilk, Coca Cola, and toast are all popular ingredients. Other people choose a more proactive approach and eat or drink specific foods before going out for the evening.

Oops! You have woken up after a night of partying with friend, only to wish that you could crawl back into bed and hide from the pain and nausea that are threatening to kill you. Congratulations! You have earned yourself a hangover. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all hangover cures, but there are some things that you can do to feel better. And luckily for you, the average hangover is over within 24 hours. Here are some steps that you can follow to help keep things together until the worst of it blows over.

Step One: Go back to bed and sleep. Your body needs rest. Not only were you out past your bedtime last night, but you overworked your entire system. Call in sick to work if you need to.

Step Two: Drink something. The best thing to reach for at this point is juice and water, which will hydrate you and replenish nutrients you lost. Orange juice is a good option. You can also try Gatorade or PowerAde to help replenish electrolytes.

Step Three: Put down the coffee pot! Many people turn to their cup of Joe in the mornings to help them feel better, but the caffeine is only going to dehydrate you more and make you feel worse.

Step Four: Eat food that is rich in minerals. Pickles or canned fish are some options if you like them. The Polish believe in drinking pickle juice.

Step Five: If you are brave, try a Bloody Mary. While adding more alcohol to your system may not help in the long run, it can alleviate some of your symptoms. The vitamins in the tomato juice may also help perk your body back up.

Step Six: Take a shower. Switch between hot and cold water while you bathe. It might make you feel better, and it will at least wash the rest of the smells of your night out from you.

Step Seven: Try some Alka-Seltzer. Many drinkers swear that it helps with the pain and nausea associated with a hangover.

Step Eight: Go out and exercise. If you can will your body out of bed, the fresh air and light activity may help you to start feeling better. Some drinkers also believe in the idea that you can help sweat the alcohol out of your system. Remember to drink plenty of water to keep from getting even further dehydrated, and you may need to repeat step six when you get home.

Step Nine: Consider a painkiller, but do so carefully. Most painkillers are not recommended for use when there is alcohol still in your system. Aspirin thins your blood like alcohol does, so may help you feel better, but can also intensify the side effects. Acetaminophen is dangerous to your liver when mixed with alcohol, and ibuprofen can cause stomach bleeding. So read labels carefully, and avoid painkillers when possible. You might consider a natural remedy like willow bark to help manage your hangover pain. Talk to your doctor before taking anything stronger than an over the counter medication when you have a hangover.

In order to cure your hangovers, you may want to know some of the myths behind them. The Oxford Medical Journal did a study on patients with liver disease caused by drinking alcohol – and 91 percent of them were only social drinkers – not alcoholics. Most were employed, in stable relationships, and only drank with family or friends. This may make you think twice before your next night out.

Hangovers are not caused only from abusing alcohol. Over 100 billion dollars are spent on alcohol each year in the United States, and most of the money is spent by social drinkers. You can get a hangover after just a couple of drinks, and the people most likely to get hangovers are those who are light to moderate drinkers.

Hangovers are not only painful, but they can be harmful to your body. The symptoms are essentially your body’s reaction to being poisoned, and even a few drinks can have lasting effects on your system.

Hangovers are not “nature’s way” of keeping you from drinking too much. If this were the case, you would get a hangover after your first drink – not the morning after. Plus, many people turn to another alcoholic drink as a way to cure their hangovers, which puts them more at risk of developing an addiction.

Being able to prevent hangovers will not lead to alcohol abuse. Hangovers are not linked with personality and drinking disorders. The more you understand about alcohol and how it affects you personally, the more likely you are to practice safer drinking practices. Plus, reducing acetaldehyde levels, the chemical that is responsible for hangovers, may also reduce your cravings for alcohol.

Over the counter pain killers are not safe for hangovers. Aspirin can intensify the effects of alcohol, as well as irritate the stomach and the digestive tract. Acetaminophen can cause liver damage with just 4 or 5 pills taken over the course of a day. Ibuprofen can cause stomach bleeding if taken with alcohol or in large doses. So you may want to think twice before popping pills to help your hangover symptoms.

Coworkers with hangovers may be funny, but they are also costing your company. Since it is generally the light-to-moderate drinkers that have the problems with hangovers, they also cause the most problems in the work place because of them, and their productivity suffers more. Each year, businesses lose billions of dollars in raised insurance costs, lost productivity, and loss of workers due to alcohol consumption.

Many people think that once your blood alcohol level has returned to normal, then you can drive or operate other machinery safely. However, hangovers can last for hours or even days beyond that time. Drivers with hangovers tested worse on driving skills tests than those who were sober. It is harder to focus when you are overtired and feeling ill, making you a greater risk on the road and in the workplace.

While many people know that alcohol and hangovers are bad, in most cases it does not stop them from drinking. However, by practicing hangover prevention techniques, such as moderating how much you drink and eating when you drink, you can not only prevent hangovers from happening, but a lot of the side effects that come along with them. In the case of hangovers, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

Those who love to go out drinking as part of their celebrations or to relieve stress from work, do so because they want to feel good and let off some steam. The last thing they want is to wake the next morning feeling like “heck”, and puking their guts out all over the bathroom floor. Knowing some handy tips about hangover prevention and implementing them BEFORE, during and after you have your alcohol will save you some grief.

Before Drinking Tips:

The #1 tip is to not to drink if you can’t handle the consequences. Most who enjoy alcohol, will not go for this tip, so move on to #2.

#2 tip is to know your limits, which is difficult if you are a first time drinker. After a few parties and other social gatherings you will begin to know just how much of each type of alcoholic beverage you can consume before you will start to feel that you are no longer in control. You limit is BEFORE you feel this way.

#3 Decide ahead of time what you will be drinking. Do not start out with beer and then switch to white wine, thinking that you will not get as drunk. Going from a dark alcoholic beverage to anything else is never a good idea. Do not mix your drink types. If you drink beer, stick with beer…a light beer is better than a dark one, in regards to hangover intensity.

#4 Drink plenty of water before going out to drink. Your body needs water as a general rule, but when you plan on drinking, water will diffuse some of the dehydrating effect of the alcohol.

#5 Eat a really good and nutritious meal before you start having fun with alcohol. Meals high in carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals as well as those that contain cheese are excellent ones to have before drinking alcohol.

Tips for During Your Alcoholic Event:

#1 – Do not let anyone buy you a different type of drink than you have already been drinking. If you are drinking vodka, stick to vodka. If you are drinking beer do not switch to white wine. Mixing your drink types can lead to a more intense hangover.

#2 – Drink water or fruit juice in between your alcoholic beverages. This will help to hydrate your body. It takes 200 ml of water to combat the affects of a 30 ml alcoholic drink.

#3 – It is also better to drink alcohol in with a carbonated drink because it absorbs the affect a little.

#4 – Stay away from sugar while you are drinking anything with alcohol in it. Sugar and alcohol do not mix and will intensify your hangover symptoms.

#5 – Snack on peanuts, popcorn or sandwiches while you are drinking alcohol. The food won’t absorb the alcohol but it will increase your metabolism that does activate the alcohol absorption and increases the rate at which your body will dispense the alcohol level in your bloodstream.

#6 – Enjoy the company, but don’t get sucked into having to keep up with them. Know your limit and stick to it. If you have already consumed your limit for alcohol ask for a virgin drink and just don’t let the others know it is nonalcoholic. This way you will still feel like part of the crowd without sharing their next day miseries.

After the Booze has Ended:

As soon as you get home, drink a full glass of plain water and take two Ibuprofen tablets before heading to bed. If you feel that you may have over done the alcohol than prepare all of your headache remedies now while you are still feeling good, because you won’t be feeling like reaching for things, opening containers and mixing Blood Mary’s in the morning.

Get as much rest as possible.
