A vasectomy is an option that a man may chose when he wishes to not be able to make a woman pregnant. This is a permanent choice for birth control in which the man is unable to impregnate any female after the vasectomy.

The vasectomy procedure is an operation involving cutting the tubes called “vas deferens”. The reason the tubes are cut is so that the sperm cannot reach the semen.

The vasectomy typically is done in the doctor’s office or as an outpatient in a hospital or surgical center. The operation itself, takes about 30 minutes. The man is awake during the procedure. A local anesthetic is used to numb the male’s scrotum. Once the area is numb, the doctor will cut a small opening on one side of the scrotum and pull out part of the vas deferens on that side. The male will normally feel some tugging or pulling sensations during the procedure at this point. The ends of the vas deferens will be stitched shut to seal them. Sometimes instead of stitching another method of sealing the ends may be used such as searing them with heat. The other side of the scrotum is then done in the exact same manner. At the end of the procedure the doctor will close both of the openings with stitches. The stitches will disappear by themselves after 3 to 10 days.

There is a no-scalpel vasectomy in which a small puncture (hole) is made in the scrotum instead of an incision. The hole does not require stitches to heal.

Vasectomy is the safest, most effective method of birth control. Statistically only 15 out of 10,000 who have used vasectomy as a birth control method will experience a pregnancy during the first year of the procedure.

Males should not use this method of birth control unless they are 100% sure that they do not ever want to have a child.

Males who have an active infection on or around the genitals may need to wait until the infection clears. A doctor would be able to advise a male with a genital infection of the possibilities involving the suitability of a vasectomy.

Males with a bleeding disorder should not have a vasectomy. Consult with your doctor if you desire birth control and have a bleeding disorder.

Vasectomies can be undone; called a “reversal”. The reversal surgery is expensive, and not usually covered by insurance. The reversal must be performed in a hospital. After a successful vasectomy reversal males may be able to ejaculate sperm after the surgery, but the sperm may not be able to fertilize an egg; making pregnancy impossible. This is why a vasectomy is considered to be a permanent birth control option.

As with any birth control option there are many factors to consider when making your choice. Partners should be consulted and all the options carefully researched. Doctors are excellent sources of information regarding what benefits and risks are associated with each birth control option. Any surgery no matter how minor has risks that should be understood as part of the decision-making process. The male should be instructed before the day of the operation about any preparations including how to clean the genital area. It is usually advised that someone else drive the male home from the procedure and that the male bring with him a jockstrap.

Many men and women want to know what it is like after having a vasectomy? Couples and single men for many reasons choose the procedure. Having surgery, no matter how minor is still a big deal as it changes how a couple view sexes. It becomes more spontaneous when one does not have to think about prevention all the time. A permanent birth control method has many advantages. Before, a couple, or a single male can get to the “good stuff”; there is still a matter of the recuperation after surgery.

A male has several choices when it comes to where the vasectomy is done. A vasectomy can be performed in a doctor’s office, medical clinic or in a hospital. There are several choices as to who will do the procedure. A qualified medical doctor, an urologist, a reproductive specialist, or a surgeon can do a vasectomy. There are even choices as to the method used to do the vasectomy (traditional, no-scalpel, clip, or laser.

The recuperation and risks are pretty much the same no matter which type of vasectomy you have done. A local anesthetic will be administered and will wear off approximately an hour after the procedure is completed. Your doctor will give you any required prescriptions or talk to your regarding the use of over-the-counter pain relievers. Prescriptions may be for antibiotics or pain relievers. You may also be told about how to make up ice packs and how and when to use them. Your doctor will likely give you both verbal and written instructions. You were probably told to have someone on hand to drive you home from your procedure.

Your recovery should be uneventful and your doctor will have given you every chance to have a comfortable recovery and instructions as to what to look for in regards to side-effects from any medicine given or what to look for in regards to any possible complications or any risks to recognize and report.

It is best to not go anywhere else after the procedure, but home to rest. It is important to wear snug scrotal garment or jockey shorts immediately after the procedure and for approximately one week afterwards. You will want to bring this to your procedure appointment so that you can wear it home.

Once you get home, elevate your feet, and use ice packs for comfort. Ice packs will soothe the scrotal area for the first few days after your vasectomy. Using the ice packs will help to minimize the swelling and to decrease the discomfort you feel.

Should you notice during the first few days after your procedure any fever, chills, an increase in pain intensity, unusual swelling or drainage; notify your doctor immediately.

You will be instructed not to take any showers or baths for the two days after your procedure. You will find 20-minute warm bath soaks to be soothing after the first few days.

There should not be any lasting pain or discomfort following your vasectomy, if you do notice any lasting pain or discomfort, tell your doctor so you can be given the proper medication to relieve your symptoms.

Most doctors will schedule vasectomies for Thursdays or Fridays as this gives the men plenty of time to recuperate before going back to work. Most men need about 5 days to recuperate before returning to a normal workload that does not require any strenuous physical labor.

You will be advised to not resume sexual intercourse until at least 72 hours after surgery and most will wait until a couple of weeks until they feel physically comfortable resuming sexual activity. You will need to use an alternate form of birth control until you have had a negative sperm count test and also until you have ejaculated 20 times from the time of the vasectomy. This allows for any remaining sperm in the tubes to be expelled from the body. Sperm will still be manufactured in the testicles; they will just dissolve and be reabsorbed into the male’s body. In order to determine at what point you are considered to be sterile (no sperm) you will need to provide a sperm sample about every few weeks. Your doctor will let you know when your sperm count signifies that you are indeed sterile.

Any surgical procedure has both risks and benefits. Choosing to have a reversal of your vasectomy procedure should be carefully thought out before proceeding.

The obvious benefit of having a vasectomy reversal is that you have the possibility of returning to being able to father your own biological child. The benefit is not guaranteed however, as the risk for failure is less than 20% and may be associated with other factors, such as a low sperm count.

Known risk factors that you should know about before agreeing to have a vasectomy reversal are:

When cutting and manipulating tissues of the skin on any body part you run the risk of bleeding and bruising.

A common side effect of surgery in general is pain and swelling and this is true for your reversal.

Infection at the site of surgery is also another common risk for any kind of surgery. This risk is easily handled should it occur by the use of antibiotics.

A risk that is specific to vasectomy reversal is a “sperm granuloma”. This is a small lump that can form in the teste as a response to sperm leakage during the reversal procedure. If this happens, there is no necessary treatment unless you experience pain with it and then commonly used pain relievers are taken.

As with any use of anesthesia you do run the risk of being allergic to the type of anesthesia used during your reversal procedure. Always inform your doctor if you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to any anesthesia used in the past before you go in for your procedure and also inform the anesthesiologist who usually speaks with you before the procedure that you have had an allergic reaction previously. If you do have an allergic reaction during or after the procedure to the anesthesia used you will be treated with anti-histamines. If this happens you will need to add the anesthesia used during the operation to your list of known allergies for any future surgeries that you may have.

You may experience a decline in your sperm count as a result of scarring or blood flow interruption.

Another risk associated with vasectomy reversal is long-term testicular pain. This risk is rare and can be treated if it occurs.

Testicular atrophy is another rare complication that can happen as a result of interruption of blood flow to the testes.

Emotional complications associated with vasectomy reversals can occur as a result of stress and can be addressed through therapy sessions.

You should always discuss all risks and benefits of any surgical procedure before undergoing one. You can discuss the risks and benefits of a vasectomy reversal with your fertility specialist, physician or urologist prior to having the procedure.

Make sure that you are physically, and emotionally prepared to have the procedure before you have it done to minimize your risks and increase your benefits.

Males and their partners usually talk about the options for birth control before deciding on which method will be best. When discussing a vasectomy the male will have many questions that he needs to know the answers to before making a decision one way or the other on the vasectomy option.

Whenever anyone is considering a medical procedure that will change your body, it is important to be well informed about every aspect of the procedure before making your decision. The most commonly asked questions regarding having a vasectomy are about what the procedure involves, the statistics regarding effectiveness and safety, and the recovery period. What follows in this article are the some of the most commonly asked questions and the answers. Use this article to prepare yourself for a chat with your doctor so that you can get all the information you seek in order to make the right choice for you.

Answers for Questions about the procedure:

The vasectomy procedure renders a male sterile (unable to reproduce a child). It is a popular birth control option in the U.S. as well as worldwide. The procedure is safe, and highly effective as it is a permanent birth control choice. The vas deferens (the small tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the semen) is made useless by cutting, burning or clipping. The male can continue to have intercourse after the procedure and will still have semen, but the semen will not contain sperm (approximately 3 months after the procedure).

A no-scalpel procedure takes about 15 minutes to complete and an hour from entering the office, doing the paperwork and the preparation tasks. After the procedure the male will experience some tenderness, discomfort in the area and slight swelling for the first two to three days following the procedure. All normal activities can be resumed after a week. The doctor will give specific instructions to follow for a safe and complete recovery.

Answer to failure rate and safety questions:

The no-scalpel vasectomy has a failure rate of less than 1% as compared to the 12% failure rate of condoms and 18% failure rate of diaphragms.

There are some studies that have found that some men, who had a vasectomy 20 years earlier, have a slightly higher risk of prostate cancer than men who did not have a vasectomy. There are other studies that do not support those results. The American Urological Association and also the American Cancer Society recommend that men over the age of 50 have a regular prostate examination and a PSA blood test to help detect early prostate changes. This recommendation is the same for ALL males in this age range (50 to 70), those who have had a vasectomy AND those who have not had the procedure.

Answers to after the procedure:

Vasectomies do not work immediately. The male must have approximately 20 ejaculations following the procedure before all sperm are eliminated from his system. The male should have a sperm test to verify that he has a negative result for sperm count before stopping any other form of birth control.

The body reabsorbs the sperm after a vasectomy, which is a normal thing to happen with any unused sperm. The testicles continue to produce sperm after the vasectomy; they just do not have the opportunity to mix with the semen or to be ejaculated during sex.

A vasectomy only blocks sperm from reaching the semen it does not change your sexual drive. The semen’s color, texture and amount of fluid do not change after a vasectomy.

The cost of most vasectomies ranges from $400 to $1,200 depending on where the procedure is done, and who does the procedure.

There have been some reports of men who get vasectomies who are still able to impregnate someone. It is not because they have super sperm or anything. The likely reason is that they did not follow doctor’s instructions and make follow-up visits to check the status of their vasectomy.

To give you an idea of what a vasectomy is, it is a permanent form of birth control that renders a man sterile. This is achieved by cutting the vas deferens, the primary transportation system for the sperm. By cutting these tubes and tying or cauterizing them, this prevents the sperm from reaching the semen and thereby, preventing pregnancy. The good news is that a vasectomy does not affect the sex drive or the ability to masturbate or ejaculate. However, it is not protection against possible sexually transmitted diseases. Only a condom and/or abstinence can do that.

The vasectomy is virtually 100% safe and effective against pregnancy; however the surgery is not instantaneous. This is where mistakes are made by the men when they do not adhere to doctor instructions or go in for follow-up visits. At each follow-up visit, the ejaculate of the man is tested for any motile (active) sperm. They can still be present in ejaculate up to several months after the vasectomy.

Until the follow-up tests show the ejaculate clear of the sperm, it is important that men wear a condom or have their partner exercise some sort of birth control. Because some men do not follow through with all the doctor instructions and visits, they can still get a woman pregnant. As mentioned above, it can take several months before the sperm are gone from the semen. The more ejaculating the man does in the first few months, the quicker the sperm can leave their reproductive system.

How the Follow-Up Visits Work

Men who get vasectomies usually have to submit two different ejaculate samples by the end of the second month anniversary of the surgical procedure and again a month later. If the tests show signs of sperm, the men have to submit more samples each month for the doctor to test. The goal is to achieve two tests in a row negative for motile sperm.

One quarter of the men do not follow through with the two month follow-up tests and 1/5 did not go to subsequent follow-up visits to confirm two negative tests in a row. Therein lays the reason why some men who got vasectomies still could get women pregnant. They did not follow proper instructions.

Some men plead ignorance when it comes to realizing they had to make follow-up visits to the doctor. However, the fault lays squarely on their shoulders, not the doctors. The urologists who perform the procedure never cite 100% and are always upfront about expectations in regards to the surgery as well as recovery. If a man manages to get someone pregnant after a vasectomy, then they obviously did not go to follow-up visits.

On the rare occasions when a vasectomy does not produce sterility, it can be performed again. That ? of 1% usually achieves success the second time around. Of course, the men have to go to the doctor for follow-up visits to know their first operation was not the success they had hoped!

Those grappling with the decision regarding having a vasectomy or not, should investigate the information about all forms of birth control and take note of benefits, side effects, failure rates, the type and which of the partners use the method before deciding on a permanent method such as the vasectomy. There are many reasons for having a vasectomy performed and the reason may have a lot to do with how you look at the benefits and negatives of each of the birth control methods.

Having all the information before you when making your decision about a vasectomy choice is a smart thing to do. Use the following information to start a conversation with your medical professional and your sexual partner.

The commonly used methods of birth control include abstinence, the condom, a diaphragm, the oral “pill”, the rhythm method, spermicidal, hormone implants, hormone injections, the IUD, a vaginal pouch, the withdrawal method and the two permanent birth control options a tubal ligation and the vasectomy.

The method of birth control called, “abstinence” can be used by both males and females, is a natural method, has a 0% failure rate because it involves not having sexual intercourse and is a method that can be reversed or changed.

Using a condom as the male uses your birth control method is a barrier type of birth control, has no side effects and a failure rate of up to 33%. This method should be used each and every time you have sexual activity unless you switch to another method. The condom is the only known birth control method that protects both sexual partners against sexually transmitted diseases.

A diaphragm is used by the female sexual partner is a barrier method of birth control, has side effects, and has up to a 21% failure rate. The diaphragm must have a doctor’s prescription to be selected as your birth control method.

The hormonal implant and injection choices are both used by the female, both require a doctor’s prescription, both have side effects and the implant has a 0.2% failure rate and the injection has a 0.4% failure rate. Both of these birth control methods are long term and they both can be reversed.

The IUD (intrauterine devise) is used by the female, needs to have a doctor’s prescription, and has side effects. The IUD has from a 0.5% to a 5% failure rate and is a long-term birth control method that can be reversed.

The oral “pill” is a birth control method used by the female, uses hormones, needs to have a doctor’s prescription, has side effects, and has a failure range of between 0.16% and 3%. This method can be reversed but it should be noted that it may take the female body from a month to a few months to become regulated again regarding ovulation cycle should the woman desire to become pregnant after using this method of birth control.

The rhythm method is used by both the female and the male, is a natural birth control method has a failure rate of 14% and up to as high as 47% depending on how informed about the method and how disciplined both partners are regarding using the method.

Spermicidal are used by the female and are a barrier method of birth control. They do not need a doctor’s prescription as they are over-the-counter and available at most drug stores, and other retail establishments. They have a 13% to 28% failure rate and can be reversed.

A vaginal pouch is used by the female, is a barrier method, has a 28% failure rate and can be reversed.

Both the vasectomy and the tubal ligation are surgical procedures that are a permanent birth control choice. Both procedure can be reversed but at great cost and require surgery to be reversed. The tubal ligation has a 0.2% to 0.4% failure rate and the vasectomy has a 0.02% to 0.2% failure rate. The vasectomy requires local anesthesia and the tubal requires general anesthesia, which carries with it more risks than the local. The vasectomy is considered to be minor surgery and takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes of actual surgery time as compared to the tubal which is major surgery and is a lengthy operation that can be done following the birth of a child by c-section or is done separately. Both operations can be reversed if the desire to have a child is changed but neither of the success rates for reversal or guaranteed and the reversal surgeries carry the same risks and complication factors that other surgeries carry.

A vasectomy is an uncomplicated surgical procedure which renders a man unable to father children. In essence, a man becomes sterile and approximately half a million men in this country opt for this elective procedure. The vasectomy is only second to female contraception for means of birth control.

Basically, in a vasectomy, the doctor blocks or ties off the vas deferens which is tubes that transport the sperm to the semen. The sperm are produced in the testes and then stored in the epididymis until ready for the ejaculate. The vas deferens tubes are present in both testes and must both be blocked in order for this surgery to work as a permanent means of birth control.

The Traditional Approach to Vasectomy

When a doctor follows the traditional approach to vasectomy, this means they make a tiny incision in the scrotum for each vas deferens tube. The area is numbed with an anesthetic which may be administered via a needle injection or through a new method which uses a pressurized jet spray to administer the numbing agent. The incision exposes the vas deferens tube which is then cut and often tied and cauterized before sewing back up the incision.

No-Scalpel Vasectomy Approach

You can thank the Chinese for developing the method by which no scalpel is used in the vasectomy procedure. Instead, the doctor uses a clamp to hold the vas deferens in place once located under the skin of the scrotum. Then, the doctor uses a special piece of equipment which placed a small pierce in the skin and then enlarges the opening a bit to cut the vas deferens and tie it off.

There is little bleeding with this technique and no use of the scalpel. As a result, this particular method often does not even require stitches to close the puncture mark as it would heal fast. The no-scalpel method is just as safe as the traditional approach but there are fewer complications and also less pain. Men who undergo this particular type of vasectomy are less likely to form any infection at the site and will also experience less bruising and swelling. The drawback is that some doctors are not well-versed on the procedure.

Safety Concerns

For the most part, a vasectomy is a safe procedure and a large percentage of men have nothing more than a dull ache and possibly some swelling and bruising for a few days. A rare few experience more in-depth complications like infection or even allergic reactions to the anesthetic.

It is important to note however that even with the vasectomy, men need to have an alternate form of birth control in place for a few months afterward. This is because it takes time for the sperm to make its way out of the reproductive system. Regular doctor follow-up visits are necessary so that the ejaculate can be analyzed for sperm. Your doctor will let you know when the semen is given the all-clear of sperm.

While the vasectomy does prevent pregnancy, you still have to be careful of sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, if you have different sex partners, unless both of you submit to testing and are given the all-clear, it is important to wear a condom as it will help prevent the spread of disease.

Overall, the vasectomy is a safe procedure with very few problems. A man’s masculinity is intact and there are no changes to the hormone levels either. It is just a safe and permanent form of male birth control.

Permanent birth control is a serious decision to consider and when you are a man, you need to talk the vasectomy option over with your female partner or wife. It is a decision that will affect not only you but also any female you are intimate with. For this reason, you have to examine your lifestyle and your desires for not having children at all or for not having any more joined your complete family.

You should always view a vasectomy as permanent with no way back. While there are vasectomy reversal surgeries available, there is more chance of complications. Plus there are no guarantees that the reversal will even work. The urologist of your choice should be consulted first and options discussed in great detail in advance of any decision.

Youth Should be Considered

Any relatively young man should not be hasty in choosing a vasectomy as permanent birth control. While you may think you do not want children ever, the right female partner may come along changing your perceptions of diaper duty. Priorities change all the time especially when you mature.

Many doctors are hesitant to perform a vasectomy on anyone younger than age 35 and some will flat out refuse. However, if you are still young but already have several children and don’t want more, doctors are more receptive to your wishes for a vasectomy. Each case is different but on the whole, youth is often a strike against getting a vasectomy.

The average age of a man seeking a vasectomy is the late 30′s through the 40′s. This is the average time when men have had all the children they want or have lived long enough to know they do not want children. Men should strongly consider the vasectomy as permanent birth control over a woman contemplating tubal ligation. It is a much safer and easier procedure and you would be up and around normally in days versus a women being out of commission for up to a few months with the possibility of complications.

Addressing the Man’s Concerns

The main concern men have regarding a vasectomy is the pain. Most men shudder when they think of scalpels and needles going where few have gone before. Luckily these days, men have more options like the no-scalpel and no-needle approach which greatly cut down on pain and recovery time. In fact, some men report little to no pain whatsoever after a vasectomy using these approaches.

You should realize that following the doctor’s instructions is crucial to a successful vasectomy. Some men are concerned that their female partners could still get pregnant because they hear stories about failed vasectomies. The problem is usually not the vasectomy itself but the negligence on part of the man for not following instructions. You see, sperm are still active up to several months after a vasectomy. It takes time for the sperm to vacate the reproductive system, so frequent ejaculation in the first weeks is essential to “flush out the system” of sperm.

Doctors can easily run tests to check for the appearance of sperm in semen samples however if a man does not go in for the routine follow-ups he is not going to know whether he still has a few hearty swimmers. Therefore, it is important that you follow-through totally when you get a vasectomy. Otherwise, you just may be surprised by a little bundle of joy in nine months. By following the doctor’s instructions and going to routine check-ups, you will know when you can do away with alternative forms of birth control. The payback is a sex life free of pregnancy worries.

A vasectomy is a usual option that is brought up whenever the conversation turns to birth control methods of a permanent nature. The usual two choices discussed are tubal ligation and vasectomy. These two procedures are both surgical and both permanent birth control methods. The vasectomy is safe, relatively easy to perform and is highly effective (1% – 2% failure rate). The vasectomy is a popular birth control option for males and couples who are certain that they either do not want children or they have all the children they want to conceive. Over 600,000 Americans make the choice to have a vasectomy and 30 million males have had the procedure worldwide.

There are many reasons for choosing a vasectomy as the birth control method including:

* Not wanting to have any biological children

* Having had all the children desired in a family

* Medical issues that would be either harmful to the child or for other reasons (cost, genetic diseases) that biological children are not a good idea

* The male or a couple decide that they cannot afford to raise a child

* The male or couple feel strongly that they should not add to the world population or that kids already born should be cared for or adopted before adding more children to the population

* Sometimes it is just a personal choice not to have the responsibility of being a parent

* Those who enjoy having sex without the concerns of having an unwanted pregnancy

* Those faced with the fact that for them, other methods of birth control are not available or safe for them medically.

Any surgical procedure has associated risks and deciding to have a vasectomy should never be a rushed decision. The information about the procedure, and the reason(s) for wanting a vasectomy should be explored in depth because it is a permanent birth control method. A vasectomy reversal is possible but the procedure is both costly and not guaranteed to work. All options for birth control should be explored before choosing which method is the right one. If either of the sexual partners is under age 25, a vasectomy is probably not a good idea and should be discussed with a medical professional regarding changing circumstances and the long-term and permanency of the procedure.

A vasectomy can be performed in a doctor’s office, medical clinic or hospital and there are many professionals who can perform the procedure including a qualified medical doctor, someone who specializes in urological or reproductive procedures, an urologist and a surgeon.

A vasectomy is done to prevent the sperm from mixing with the semen, thus preventing pregnancy from occurring.

The anesthetic is applied either by an injection, or a “no-needle” jet injection device.

Traditional vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that can be performed at the doctor’s office, in a medical clinic or in a hospital. Two incisions are made in the thin skin of the scrotum, one on either side in order to expose the small vas deferens (tubes that the sperm travel in). The vas deferens is lifted out, cut and tied. Sometimes the ends are cauterized (burned). The tubes are returned to the scrotum and the incisions are closed with stitches.

The no-suture method involves locating the tubes, clipping them in place, using a tiny puncture to open the skin and remove the tube, cut, tie, clip or burn the ends and replace them back into the scrotum.

The clip vasectomy uses clips to leave a permanent staple-like device in the scrotum that seals the ends of the tubes.

Laser vasectomy is another method used in which an opening is still made through the thin scrotum skin.

During the operation to perform a vasectomy (a permanent form of birth control), a male’s testicles and scrotum are cleaned using antiseptic. The male may or may not be shaved first depending on the policy of the facility at which the operation is being conducted. Next the individual may be given an oral medication or it may be given by intravenous method (IV). This medication is to reduce any anxiety concerning the procedure and to make the male sleepy. Usually the individual will not remember much about the procedure once the medication is taken.

Each of the male’s vas deferens is located by touch and a local anesthetic injected into the area. The doctor/surgeon will make two small opening (incisions) into the scrotum, one opening on either side. The two vas deferens tubes are then cut and the ends are tied, stitched or sealed with heat. The entire vasectomy takes about 30 minutes to complete. The procedure can be accomplished in several different facilities including hospital, surgical clinic, even the doctor’s office. A general surgeon, an urologist or your family medical doctor, may do the vasectomy.

There are two alternative procedures to the standard vasectomy. One alternative is called the “no-scalpel vasectomy” and uses a small clamp with a pointed end instead of the scalpel to poke the skin of the scrotum instead of cutting it. The benefits of using this technique over the scalpel is that there is less bleeding, a smaller hole is made, and fewer complications are encountered from the vasectomy. The “no-scalpel vasectomy” is just as effective as the more traditional vasectomy using a scalpel.

The “Vasclip implant procedure”, is when the vas deferens is locked closed with a product called a “Vasclip”. The vas deferens are not cut, sutured, or even cauterized. This potentially reduces pain and also complications. It must be noted though that there are studies that show this Vasclip implant procedure is not as effective as the other two methods of vasectomies.

After surgery, the scrotum will be numb for approximately 2 hours. The male will be instructed to place cold packs to the area and to lie on his back as much as possible for the rest of the day. He will need to wear snug underwear or a jockstrap to help ease discomfort and to protect the area from harm during the healing process. He may experience some swelling and minor pain in the scrotum area for several days after the vasectomy.

If the male’s work is not physically strenuous, he will be able to return to work in 1 or 2 days. He will be instructed to avoid any heavy lifting for approximately 1 week.

The male can return to sexual intercourse when he is physically comfortable doing so. The normal time to resume sexual relations is approximately 1 week after the surgery.

It must be advised that pregnancy is still possible until the male has had approximately 20 ejaculations over a short period of time to be certain that any remaining sperm has been released. During this period of time when pregnancy is still possible alternate birth control will need to be taken. Follow-up sperm counts are necessary to ascertain that the sperm count is indeed zero before no other birth control method is necessary.

Having had a vasectomy will not in any way interfere with the male sex drive, or with the ability to have erections, or to feel the sensation of orgasm and it will also not interfere with his ability to ejaculate. The male may have some mild aching in the testicles during the sexual arousal period of intercourse for a few months following his surgery.
