Gambling addiction has become a serious problem these days. With the rising popularity of the game, more and more individuals are getting trapped in addiction. This addiction doesn’t develop overnight; there are various reasons that act as a catalyst. Gambling can easily get converted into an addiction as it leads to pleasure in the initial levels. Consequently certain pathways in the brain get stimulated, which produce certain chemicals that are rewarding to the person forcing him to gamble again. Often the person knows that gambling is not good but still that awareness is over shadowed by the pull of addiction. Understanding these causes a special therapy called as Cognitive Therapy.

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive Therapy is a behavioral therapy and is a highly effective approach to psychological treatment. Addiction is a psychological behavior of a person and is considered as a negative behavior. The Cognitive therapy aims at identifying and helping a person to correct the specific behaviors that he or she is thinking are producing negative or painful feelings. Such negative thoughts also influence a person’s behavior, which results in maladaptive choices and reaction.

In Cognitive therapy conscious efforts are made to change the thought process of an individual. The therapy aims at correcting and checking a person’s automatic thought, assumptions and core beliefs. With this intervention significant change in person’s emotions and behavior can be seen. Furthermore special behavioral techniques and strategies are employed to enhance the treatment outcome. These techniques normally include anger management, relaxation training, graduated exposure to feared situation and assertiveness training.

The course of treatments of Cognitive therapy is brief, and encouraging and relatively rapid developments have been seen till know.

Cognitive therapy today has become popular in the United States and Internationally. Today many examples can be seen of individuals overcoming gambling addiction with help of the therapy. Moreover the affectivity of the treatment depends on the person. For better results more than the medicine positive attitude and determination is more crucial. Let us not forget where there is a will there is a way and every dark cloud has a silver lining.
