Deal With Your Hangover
However you got there, the symptoms of a hangover are the same. Terrible headache, the feeling like your stomach is going to revolt against you, dry mouth, and the general feeling like you were recently run over. For some people, these symptoms will be worse than others. Here are some ways with how to deal.
It may be helpful to understand the science behind hangovers. A big reason you feel the way you do is the fact that you are dehydrated. Remember all those trips to the bathroom last night? That was you getting rid of essential fluids and nutrients. Another thing you can blame your hangover on is the congeners found in alcohol. Some people can break these down better than others, and cheap, dark liquors are more likely to have them than the lighter, more expensive varieties.
The best advice to preventing a hangover is to start before you begin drinking. Eat a full meal, preferably something loaded with fats and carbohydrates. This will help line your stomach and dilute the first couple of drinks you have. Taking a multivitamin and drinking plenty of water can help start the fight against dehydration later in the evening.
While you are at the bar, there are things you can do as well. Order ice water with your drinks, or make sure that at last call you order a few bottles of water instead of a drink. When you get home, you can do your typical routine of drunken phone calls and raiding the fridge, but try to drink as much water as possible. If you can, try to eat something as well. It will be a lot easier to do that now than in the morning. Also, stay up and let the alcohol buzz run its course before going to bed. Consider taking a walk or watching some TV in the interim.
Of course, there are going to be nights where you do not follow your own good advice and wake up with a freight train in your head. Then there are a variety of cures that you can try.
Drinking some more will make you feel better temporarily. However, it is really only postponing the unavoidable, and a good start to becoming an alcoholic. However, drinking as much as you can of anything non-alcoholic can make you feel better. Water, juice, even chocolate milk can be good options for getting some nutrients and to replenish the fluids. Gatorade or other sports drinks contain electrolytes that can also help with the dehydration (or even PediaLyte if you have kids and have a bottle in the house). Just avoid options with caffeine since they will only make the dehydration worse.
Never skip breakfast, since in the long run it will only make you feel worse. The best option is to eat as soon as possible after waking to avoid getting even more nauseous. Toast, eggs, and bananas are all easy on the stomach and packed with nutrients that will help you battle your hangover symptoms.
Do not forget your favorite painkiller to help with the worse of your aches and pains. There is some debate as to whether or not they are safe to take the night before, but most can be taken the next day. Just read labels, and avoid anything that should not be taken by people with sensitive stomachs if you are feeling nauseous.
