Pregnancy is the most awaited, happiest moment in every woman's life. Many changes take place in the body during the pregnancy. After the delivery, the body returns to the non-pregnant condition. It is called as the postpartum period. Many women face some health problems during the postpartum period. Some of the common problems are vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain and breast engorgement or mastitis.

The vaginal discharge or lochia is common immediately after delivery. There is a bloody discharge from the vagina. It turns pinkish within a week and whitish or yellowish after 10 days. It lasts for 2-4 weeks. Occasional blood clots may also pass. Use of pads is recommended. The sexual intercourse should be avoided until the lochia is decreased.

The woman may face the difficulty in urination for one or two days after the delivery. It is common to urinate more frequently after delivery. Excessive sweating is observed in some women to lose the extra fluid. Most of the women complain the constipation or discomfort with the bowel movements for the few days after the delivery. If you had an episiotomy in your vagina, then the first bowel movement will be painful. The solution is that you should drink plenty of water and fruit juices to avoid the constipation. You can also try a stool softener medicine like Colace.

After delivery, the woman feels pain, weakness and discomfort around the vagina. If she has an episiotomy or tear in the vagina or a cesarean delivery, she feels the discomfort while walking or sitting. The woman should strictly follow the instructions given by the doctor.

During the third and fourth days after the delivery, the breasts start to fill with the milk. It can cause swelling and discomfort in the breasts. Frequent breast-feeding will reduce the engorgement of the breasts. A simple remedy to get relief from the discomfort of swelling is to place the ice packs. Some women feel comfortable after a hot shower or warm compresses on the breasts.

During first few days of breast-feeding, the nipples may become sore or tender. It may go away when the feeding becomes habitual. It the baby is latching onto the breast properly, the problems like blocked milk ducts, sore nipples and breast infections are prevented.
