The habits of gambling may be of different types but it differs from person to person. Although there are different types of gamblers the Illinois institute for addiction and recovery has classified some basic types of them. The first one on the list is the professional gambler who makes their living by gambling and hence considers it a profession. Most of them are skilled in the games and are able to control both the amount of money and time spent on the game. Generally most of them are not addicted to the game. Then comes the antisocial or the personality gamblers who use gambling as a illegal means to get money. Most of them are found to be involved in fixing horse or dog races and very often they attempt to use a compulsive gambling diagnosis as a legal defense. There are also the casual social gamblers, those who use gamble for recreation sociability and entertainment. For them gambling is nothing more than a distraction or a form of relaxation that does not interferes with family, social or vocational obligations.

Gambling addiction is a progressive disease. In most of the cases it is observed that it begins very slowly and grows potentially until the victims life becomes progressively unmanageable. As repetitive efforts fail to gain control over the addiction the life for the compulsive gambler begins to fall apart. Many a times this conditions provokes an inside urge that makes the victim vulnerable to alcohol, drugs and many other elements anti social elements. However all the compulsive gamblers can stop gambling for a while but to stop the addiction of gambling for a lifetime but most people needs professional help for that. Although physical health turns out to be of minor significance for the compulsive gambler but researches concluded that it can be a major important tool in quitting the habit. Studies have found that most of the compulsive gamblers are either in a poor physical health while getting addicted to gambling. This means that if the importance of physical health is emphasized upon the gamblers it can help them in getting rid of the habit. They will become more aware of the condition and will cease to spend more money on gambling.
