Although when an individual practices an activity in an uncontrolled manner, he becomes an addict. Getting addicted to anything is always terrible, especially if the addiction is related to smoking, drinking or gambling. Gambling addiction has the worst consequences with entire families getting destroyed due to it. When an individual becomes a gambling addict there are various measures through which they can overcome this addiction. However, the most important way to overcome gambling addiction is to practice innate restraint and self control. When individuals can successfully learn to control gambling urges they can rest assured of overcoming gambling addiction.

Self Control

It is because individuals cannot control their over- frequent gambling urges that they become gambling addicts. If they cannot control their gambling urges, practicing any other method to quit gambling would not yield the desired results. The entire initiative rests with the individual as far as overcoming any addiction is concerned. Hence, when individuals suffer from gambling addiction they have extreme urges to indulge in gambling that are difficult for them to control. There are some basic ways through which individuals can control gambling urges. They are as follows:

1) When individual has a craving for gambling he must first share it with his friends or family members. Sharing the urge with someone can result in reducing the urge to a great extent.

2) When addicts have an urge to gamble they must try to divert their attention towards various other goals. The best way to divert attention is to go out and have a walk or visit a restaurant or a cinema. Even going for shopping is a good idea and the best way to divert attention.

3) Yet another way to divert attention is that individuals can indulge in a sport, be it indoor or outdoor. Sports like tennis, golf, baseball or even chess can significantly help the individual to suppress the urge. In fact individuals would not even realize when the urge of gambling has gone away.

4) Indulging in reading can also go a long way in overcoming the gambling urges and help the individuals to gradually overcome gambling addiction.

If individuals seriously practice these measures of overcoming gambling urges, they can not only get over those urges but also overcome addiction successfully. These are the simplest ways of overcoming gambling urges.
