Models Of Maternity Care
Pregnancy is a blessing for every woman in the world. Proper care and caution in effective ways will lower the pregnancy risk considerably. Three varied models should be made easily accessible to women. Primary secondary and tertiary maternity care must ensure equity to all pregnant women.
Primary maternity care and services are offered by both midwives and general physicians. Comforts which are felt primary will be extended to the maternity patients. They out of the hospital reach and baby’s birth will take place in birth centers or even in houses. Primary care may be offered either by community or maternity units. They are mostly found in rural areas that do not possess any plan for birthing.
Secondary maternity services extend antenatal labor and postnatal care for both women and babies. They may have certain complications and must be referred by the doctors. They provide additional or extra maternity care to the patients.
Multi facility services for pregnant women who need regular fetal monitoring and face rare complications are provided with tertiary care. Collaboration of services and easy access to the services that are secondary prove to be successful due to the protection and safety methods.
Obstetricians and gynecologists are very essential to provide tertiary care as the pregnant women may face difficult complications. Midwives are also involved in providing tertiary care and there will be a continuation of clinical care during labor. Adequate care will be extended during postnatal period.
There are certain hospitals that extend all the three services to the maternity people. If any sudden complication crops up in the primary level they will immediately transferred or referred to the doctors and obstetricians in the tertiary level. All the three levels of maternity service functions are similar with slight changes in the level of care extended.
According to the preference of the maternity patients they will be taken in to the level of treatments. Tertiary level proves to be highly expensive as the care is extended by skilled and educated doctors. Primary services are very economical as the patients are taken care of midwives who are only trained but not skilled doctors.
