More Contraception Misconceptions
The more misinformation that surrounds contraception the worse it is for those who are just learning the facts. If all the unanswered questions come back with answers that terrify or simply answers that are wrong, this can be all it takes to convince anyone that using birth control will be bad for their health, not work properly, or have side effects that will not be welcomed.
One such misconception is that taking the Pill causes a woman to gain excessive weight. This is totally false. Women do not gain a lot of weight just because they are taking birth control pills though they will often see a slight change in breast size. Interestingly some women lose weight while others stay exactly the same and some gain a little. But, excessive weight gain is not an issue when using the Pill.
It has been said that the IUD, intrauterine device, will cause a woman to become infertile. The claim is that the IUD will cause an STD, sexually transmitted disease, and this will render her infertile. First, IUDs cannot cause STDS. But, if a woman contracts an STD the IUD can increase its spread and this could eventually interfere with her fertility. The key to this is for a woman to remain monogamous and therefore be less likely to contract an STD. It will not be the fault of the IUD; it is a safe and effective means of contraception. Another myth is that the IUD can prevent STIs, also known as sexually transmitted infections. This is very wrong. The only method of birth control that can prevent the spreading of an STI is the condom. No other method can do anything about their spread and this includes the barrier methods as well.
Some women believe that they cannot conceive if they do not have an orgasm; not true. A women’s satisfaction during her sexual encounter has nothing to do with getting pregnant. That happens because the man’s sperm fertilizes the woman’s egg. This is totally unaffected by a lack of orgasm.
Another contraception misconception is that a woman who decides to have a baby must wait a few months after she stops the Pill to get all the hormones out of her body so she can conceive. This is very wrong. If this were the case why would woman worry when they miss a pill? How would they be able to get pregnant if they had sex on a day they forgot to take one? The hormones from the Pill do not remain in a woman’s body for an unlimited time. That is why the Pill must be taken every day between menstruation cycles.
Many men will say that they cannot possibly wear a condom because then the experience will to be as good for them. They claim that the condom takes away from the sensation of the act. This is completely false. While it may have been true when they were first made this is not the way it is now with the ultrathin highly sensitive ones used today.
