Gift Is It Really A Gift

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer, or GIFT, is the process by which multiple eggs and sperm are injected into the fallopian tube in hopes of inducing fertilization and thus triggering a pregnancy. Unfortunately, this method leaves a lot to fate, and cannot be said to actually cause pregnancy. Therefore, there is much question as to whether or not GIFT is really a helpful procedure or not.

Unlike in-vitro fertilization and zygote intrafallopian transfers (ZIFT), GIFT does not guarantee the fertilization of any of the eggs that are being placed. That much is left up to the sperm to take care of. This means that if the sperm are not strong enough to penetrate the egg themselves, there is no chance of the woman becoming impregnated and the procedure becomes quite useless.

Birth Defects Make Er Visits Problematic

If you have children, you will undoubtedly spend some time in the emergency room (ER). Of course, the fortunate parent of the child who looks prior to leaping and exercises caution rather than throwing it to the wind will most likely spend a lot less time at the ER than others. Yet if you have a child with a birth defect, you may find that this very abnormality may cause you to see a lot more of the inside of the ER than perhaps you had bargained for prior to becoming a parent. Add to this that many children with birth defects will still be, well, children, and understand that a birth defect will not necessarily slow down the adventurous spirit of your child, and you might end up exchanging Christmas cards with the ER intake nurse and be on a first name basis with most of the staff.

How To Recognize If A Birth Defect Is Affecting Your Child

Birth defects are quite frequently broken down into two categories: visible, outward deformities and invisible, systemic or organic abnormalities. While the former are usually clearly defined and their scope is well documented, the latter will sometimes present something of a problem when attempting to limit the sphere of influence the defect has on the developing child. Speech and language development most frequently fall under the symptoms which may crop up unexpectedly, even if the birth defect was considered to be contained and limited to only certain areas of the body or centers of development.

(For those, whose memory is as porous as mine, VV is our shorthand for varicose veins and PCP is insurance/medical shorthand for your primary care physician, also known as your family doctor.) Now, you can get a good idea what this is going to cost you (because you always ask about the charges up front, right?).
