Sharing Maternity Care

Sharing care during maternity period is the most important and notable factor. Every woman after the confirmation of pregnancy can have their own choice of doctors for review of medical checkups. Sharing of maternity care include both prenatal and postnatal care.

Women in rural areas are denied of prenatal care as they live in remote areas where obstetricians are not available. Continuation of care will be lacking in such situations. They approach the doctors only in case of emergency. In rural hospital midwives play a part of doctor’s role and extend care and services to the needy people. But most of the women prefer to have continuity and shared care during her maternity period and after the birth of the new born.

Normally arrangement of the shared care is different. Primary care and service is provided by the midwives and family physicians. Patients with minimum risk factors are taken care by the family physicians. Deliveries assisted by instruments are treated by these doctors. Although many women believe that competent care can be offered only by the family physicians.

Physicians feel that popular reason behind shared care is exchange and communication of proper information. Physicians interested in shared care thereby start communicating and arranging for gynecologists or delivery physicians. The significant factors and early out comes can be assessed only through regular checkups and intervals. According to the reports shared care extends better maternity care for everyone.

Maternity services will be improved and focused when it is shared. Better relationship and sensitivity approach will render quality medical services to the patient. Duplication of information and errors due to insufficient communication will be completely avoided.

Mothers and families can be provided with information and suggestion that may prove to be valuable during maternity period. There will be periodical evaluation and review of the patient which is possible only with familiar doctors.

Doubts regarding postnatal care can be clarified. Shared care has better and improved facilities. After the discharge of the patient there will be continuity in treatments and checkups. Due to the highlighted features in shared maternity care women are naturally attracted.
