Hangovers are a literal pain to those who drink. A nighttime of partying, followed by headaches, nausea, and a dry mouth can certainly play havoc on your body. Here is a look at hangovers and ways that you can get rid of them fast.

A hangover is caused from a combination of a couple of sources. First, you have the by-products of alcohol metabolism, such as acetaldehyde, to deal with. Dehydration also plays a big role in your symptoms. Then, you also have the depletion of several vitamins, namely Vitamins A, B and C to deal with.

Besides these, some drinks have more impurities than others, causing you to feel the side effects more. Known as congeners, these impurities are found in many alcoholic beverages to some degree. Ethyl alcohol is the one that is measured since it is the one that gets you drunk, but you will also find amyl, butyl, methyl, propyl, and isopropyl alcohols in many of your drinks.

The concentrations of these impurities depend on the type of alcohol. Clear drinks are filtered, and generally have fewer congeners. More expensive alcohols are also filtered more than cheap ones, so that you end up with fewer impurities.

Everywhere in the world where you can find alcohol, you will also find hangover cures. Hangovers supersede the lines of race, religion, gender, and cultures. In fact, if you interview just a few of your friends you are sure to come up with a laundry list of different options to try.

If you find that you overindulged last night, here are some things that you can try. Ibuprofen will often work wonders, though read the labels of any of your over the counter painkillers. Some can have toxic effects when mixed with alcohol and may promote further liver damage.

If you believe in the cure of the “hair of the dog that bit you” a Bloody Mary will often work magic. Take a shot of vodka, a dash of lemon, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, a few drops of Tabasco, pepper, salt, and celery salt stirred into 5 ounces of tomato juice is a common recipe. The tomato juice will help replenish some lost vitamins, while the alcohol will help with the alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Critics, however, say that drinking alcohol the next morning will only prolong your pain, so you may be better off with a glass of V8.

Other things that you can try include: taking a hot shower, doing deep breathing exercises, try walking or light exercise, drinking plenty of water, and eating bananas. Bananas include fructose and potassium, which can help replenish nutrients you lost due to dehydration and raise your blood sugar back to a normal level. They may also help with nausea, and the magnesium in them may even help with your headache.

Keep in mind that even with the best hangover cures your body still needs time to recuperate. So if you do not have time to spend suffering in the morning, you are better off limiting your drinking the night before.
