The Top Three Hangover Cures
Whether you are planning the ultimate tailgate party in your background or a night out on the town with the girlfriends, if you are planning on drinking alcohol you have to be aware of the potential for hangovers. Here are the top three ways that you can keep from being miserable the next morning.
Number One: Watch out for the effects of alcohol to keep them at a minimum. For starters, never start your evening of drinking with an empty stomach. Food will slow down the absorption of alcohol, helping to keep you sober longer and stave off a hangover. You will also have more energy to party all night long if you have a good meal ahead of time, and will be less likely to fill up on the fattening bar food or tailgating treats.
At the same time, get hydrated. Your body is mostly water, and alcohol quickly flushes water from your system. So make sure you are hydrated when you leave and when you get home again, as well as much throughout the evening as you can.
Contrary to popular belief, do not pop a bunch of painkillers when you get home to prevent a hangover the next morning. The medication may interact with the alcohol in the system, upsetting your stomach, slowing down the metabolism of alcohol, or even causing damage to your liver.
Number Two: Make a hangover cure smoothie. There are plenty of recipes for these out there, so you can pick your favorites or try this one. Making one before you go out for the evening and sticking in the fridge or freezer will save you some of the pain and hassle of operating the blender in the morning.
One good recipe includes: a banana, a can of V8 juice, 6 strawberries, two tablespoons of honey, a cup of orange juice, a cup or two of milk, and a little salt and nutmeg. Blend together until smooth, and take along with your painkillers in the morning when you wake up. The nutrients found in the fruits and the vegetable juice will help to hydrate you, while the milk can help coat your stomach and keep down the nausea.
Number Three: Use a hangover cure pill. These are a newer product on the market and some have proved quite effective. Be sure to read labels, since directions will vary, but most require you to take pills at some point during your evening of drinking.
The nice thing about these is that they are made from herbs, which generally do not have the problem with side effects that your painkillers and other medications might, so they are usually safe to use frequently if need be. Make sure that you take some time to research the pills themselves. Look at the ingredient list, and go for ones that have charcoal in them, not the ones that sound like a fancy multivitamin. Also watch the price tag – when shopping you will find that some brands get quite pricey, and the benefits may not outweigh the cost.
